Behind the shelves: how food gets to the pantry
Where your groceries come from, and who moves them.
Every Tuesday morning, a truck from the regional food bank backs up to our loading dock. By noon, a crew of volunteers has sorted, dated, and shelved about four tons of food.
Where it comes from
- The regional food bank, at wholesale prices.
- Our own garden, from April to October.
- Northside Grocers' day-old bread, every morning.
- Food drives from churches and schools.
Monthly gifts matter most here. They let us buy fresh food in bulk instead of waiting for what gets donated.
